about
“70s Bert” is a mini-epic fantasy song, an angular homage to Scottish guitar icon Bert Jansch and what many would call his lost decade. The narrator sings from Jansch’s perspective, bouncing around coke-fueled studio sessions as various producers and label handlers try to shape him into a fashionable modern singer/songwriter. Musical hats are tried on, trendy sonic textures are explored and pop stars are invoked (“What would Elton John do?”) before the singer begins to pine for a recent past filled with jazz workouts, all-nighters and adventurous interplay between artistically restless musicians.
lyrics
L.A., Santa Barbara, or Sussex 'neath the shady tree
You can open up a window for the sounds of the scenery
And bring along your camera, Chrysalis wants a movie
Folkies on cocaine can stake a claim or so they tell me
Provided that the drummer play a little more funky
"Stone Monkey" caught on tape by an actual stoned Monkee
And it's a little bit funny, it's a little bit like a dream
A&R bookmakers, placing bets on me
Lightfoot, McCartney, Double-W, E, J, D
What would Elton John do? That's a little bit funny to me
L.A., Santa Barbara, or Sussex 'neath the shady tree
You can open up a window
It's neither here nor there nor anywhere, it don't bother me
